Lazard's Alternative Energy Calls (CSIQ, LDK, JASO)

Between late yesterday and early today, Lazard Capital Markets' Sanjay Shrestha has keyed on many of his alternative energy picks after earnings or other news.  Among the calls are Canadian Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ), LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LDK), and JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO).  Below are the notes for each call:

  • Canadian Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) shares are up 31% to $44.85 after the company just trounced the earnings estimates.  Shrestha at Lazard maintained his buy rating.  But he raised estimates for 2008 EPS estimate to $2.15 from $1.30 and 2009 estimate to $3.40 from $1.60 to reflect the companies continued traction and capacity ramp.  His price target is now $50.00 from $24.00, reflecting a 15-times 2009 EPS.
  • LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LDK) was maintained as a HOLD rating, despite the company posting higher numbers than Shrestha's estimates.  The HOLD rating reflects his view that LDK is fairly valued at current levels on the 2009 EPS estimate from Lazard of $2.20 versus consensus of $3.72.  LDK shares are down almost 3% at $36.40.
  • JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) has also been maintained as a BUY rating, and Shrestha noted that the $300 million convertible note offering will allow the company to ramp production faster.  Shrestha raised the MW guidance to 345 from 300 for this year, and therefor raised his estimates on earnings and revenues as well.  JA Solar's $32.00 target is based upon a rough 20-times earnings for 2009.  JA Solar's stock is up over 6% at $23.55 today.

Canadian Solar Earnings Go Super-Solar (CSIQ)

Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) came out this morning and didn't just beat earnings estimates; they trounced them.  The company posted $21.2 million non-GAAP income or $0.65 non-GAAP EPS on a 34% revenue rise to $171.2 million, compared to First Call consensus estimates of $0.31 EPS and $151.9 million. For this year, the company said it is on track to achieve previous guidance of shipping 200 to 220 MW of regular solar modules in 2008.  On a longer term basis it sees 2009 access to 200 MW of regular polysilicon and wafers, but noted its ability to secure an additional 200 MW.  Co expects to produce 100 to 150 MW of UMG (upgraded metallurgical grade) silicon products in 2009.

Shares are up over 15% this morning pre-market at $39.50 in early trading.  Before this jump, the 52-week trading range was $6.50 to $34.47.

Goldman Sachs and $150 to $200 Oil (Part II) (GS)

Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) has come out and updated its "oil super-spike" prices today.  In fact, it ponders whether or not the super-spike end game has begun.  We covered part of this yesterday, and today the full details were sent out.

The firm now notes that we could see $150 to $200 per barrel of oil in the next six to 24 months.  The note says the current energy crisis may be coming to a head.  It cites lack of adequate supply growth and this notes that a needed demand rationing in the OECD areas (in particular the U.S.).

This might not even big too big of a stretch now considering the recent comments from OPEC's head.

So this $150 to $200 level seems increasingly likely... even though the brief summary is "though predicting the ultimate peak in oil prices as as the remaining duration of the upcycle remains a major uncertainty."

While this $150 to $200 level is its super-spike target, the firm has raised its 2008 spot target to $108 per barrel of West Texas Intermediate crude (previous was $96) and it has raised Brent Sea crude to $108 as well (from prior $95).

Well, this may explain some of the rapid rise in oil prices in the last two trading sessions... just when it looked like the oil prices were going to get a reprieve.

No wonder T. Boone Pickens says oil stock prices are more representative of $75 oil rather than $100 oil.
Now we know Exxon's hiked dividend has some support.

Lazard Hikes First Solar Target (FSLR)

There is an interesting call after First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) blew past earnings expectations and guidance today.  Lazard Capital Markets alternative energy analyst, Sanjay Shrestha, has reiterated his BUY rating on the stock.  But his target has been raised to $300.00 from $350.00.

Shrestha noted that its output translates to a throughput increase to 45MW per line, up from 44MW in 4Q07, suggesting capacity of 1,035MW by year-end 2009.

He believes that First Solar has $6.4 billion of total volume to be shipped under long-term contracts and it additionally has a 7.5MW order with SCE in Blythe, California, pending CPC.  Considering a factory cost ramp, efficiency/throughput gains, and lower cost/watt in Malaysia, Shrestha said he is raising 2008-2010 estimates.

This new $350 higher target represents a 40x multiple on recently raised 2010 estimates of $10.00, discounted back 15% for one year.

Interestingly enough, Shrestha's target of $350 is well under some other analyst targets out there.

Citigroup (C): Need To Raise Another $15 Billion?

Not everyone believes that Citigroup's (C) current stock sale of $4.5 billion will end the large bank's need for capital.

Oppenheimer analyst Meredith Whitney thinks that ongoing problems at the firm will lead it to sell asset or need to raise another $10 billion to $15 billion according to Reuters.

On the face of it, that could dilute current Citi shareholders by another 12% or more. The news of the $4.5 billion has taken the stock down over 3% to $25.51.

If Whitney is right, Citi's stock is moving back under $20.

Straw Poll Of Analysts Says Microsoft (MSFT) Will Make Hostile Bid For Yahoo! (YHOO)

19 to 3. That is the line-up of Wall St. analysts who think Microsoft (MSFT) will make a hostile bid for Yahoo! (YHOO) compared to those who think the companies will peacefully negotiate a deal.

According to Reuters "Most Wall Street analysts believe Microsoft now faces a drawn-out proxy campaign to win its unsolicited takeover of Yahoo."

The question then becomes what does Microsoft win? A large number of senior management people at Yahoo! who do not want to stay. They may not be needed.  And, there are probably many engineers and marketing employees at the portal who want little to do with Redmond. So, does Microsoft end up with the portal but not its critical talent?

Microsoft's best partner in the Yahoo! deal may be a recession. Engineers, even top engineers, may have trouble getting jobs in Silicon Valley if there is a sharp drop in economic growth.

Some of the largest tech and software firms may need to freeze hiring, Recent successes like Facebook could well curtail aggressive expansion.

VC funds that put money into the "hot" start-ups which draw the best talent may invest in fewer and fewer new companies. Capital will be at a premium to support firms in which they have already invested. Raising cash for new VC funds will be hit by the credit crisis.

Microsoft may be the only large US company which can use the recession to its benefit.

Oppenheimer's Lack of Enthusiasm for Ethanol (AVR, PEIX, VSE)

Oppenheimer has initiated coverage of the down and out US-ethanol sector, and the group was given a lackluster "Perform" rating.

"Perform" ratings have been assigned to Aventine Renewable Energy (NYSE: AVR), Pacific Ethanol (NASDAQ: PEIX), and VeraSun Energy (NYSE: VSE).

With most of these stocks down by two-thirds or more from their 52-week highs, this won't help a beleaguered sector.  If you watch SEC filings, you will have probably seen that Bill Gates' Cascade fund has been selling more and more of those Pacific Ethanol positions (although he took most funds out long ago).

With the exception of the farmers and businesses that this is helping out, it becomes very difficult to find people who still believe the US-based ethanol program does any good other than helping boost the cost of agriculture.

As we have maintained: "If Iowa wasn't the first state on the presidential election circus, ethanol would be handled far differently."

Goldman Sachs Sticks Sell on GameStop (GME)

GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) has seen shares downgraded at Goldman Sachs this morning.  The brokerage firm cut its already cautious Neutral rating down to a new Sell target.  The stock target is $50.00, implying a downside of 12%.

Part of Goldman Sachs' call is the relative outperformance with gains of 30% since March 10, whereas the S&P 500 is up roughly 9%. Another issue is a perceived industry deceleration from its current peak.

This also follows the resignation of President Steven Morgan on Friday, which will be effective May 2, 2008.

GameStop shares are indicated down about 3.5% this morning at $54.70.  Its 52-week trading range is $32.31 to $63.67and its market cap before the drop was nearly $9.2 Billion.

Capstone Analyst Target More Than Doubled (CPST)

There was an interesting call that came out late yesterday in the alternative energy and green energy sector regarding Capstone Turbine Corp. (NASDAQ: CPST).  Lazard Capital Markets has been positive on this one and had already been deemed aggressive with a call for more than a double, and the new call is for more than a double yet again.

Lazard's Sanjay Shrestha has reiterated his BUY rating on Capstone, but his $2.50 price target has been jacked up all the way to $6.00.  This reflects higher 2009 targets to reflect growing sales momentum and further penetration in key markets with revised revenue estimates of $50 million, up from $40 Million, after new orders have been coming on strong in the last few weeks.

Shrestha noted, "We believe the company is in the early stages of rapid growth. Capstone is clearly gaining solid traction in its target markets with improving product economics and a growing service revenue component.... We expect the shares to continue to move higher on several near-term catalysts, including additional awards from its target end markets...."

This new target reflects a 25x multiple on a recently increased F2012 EPS estimate of $0.50, discounted by 25% for three years; and it reflects an increased shipment projection for 2012 of 400 MW, up from 200 MW.

Capstone remains an active pick on our own weekly "10 Stocks Under $10" newsletter.  We have been on this one since $1.21 and have only recently noted that investors should take at least a little profit on part of the position, although we want some funds to stay in Capstone as it should head higher.  To date, it is grossly under-followed by Wall Street. Those profits should be rolled into our new "go-to" alternative energy stock that is also in the "under $10" category, and even trial memberships can get access to our new pick in the alternative energy sector.  We had always maintained that Capstone could go to $4.00 or higher rather than $2.50, and our new pick in the group is already up by 17% in the two weeks since we added it to our active list.  Our target on the new call was for a gain of nearly 50% if our price target was hit, although our target was very conservative compared to other existing price targets.

Could US Government Lose It "AAA" Rating?

S&P could pull the "AAA" credit rating of the US government. Hard to imagine.

If the US has to bail out Fannie Mae (NYSE: FNM) and Freddie (NYSE: FRE), the consequences could be awful.

According to The Wall Street Journal "While this credit crunch has hurt financial markets, S&P notes that it hasn't threatened the standing of the nation's credit quality upon which U.S. Treasurys and debt priced off this government debt depend. But should a protracted recession cause Fannie and Freddie to buckle, the U.S. rating would be in danger."

Anyone can be downgraded.

Goldman Sachs Dumps GE for Lockheed (LMT, GE)

This morning, Goldman Sachs has made a key call to its industrials sector.  It is adding Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) to its Industrials Favorite Value List.  Goldman Sachs notes the nature of defense stocks versus industrials in a recession, expectations for a solid earnings report next week, current prices representing a solid entry point.  The firm also believes that Lockheed martin is the cheapest of the large cap defense stocks, and its $122 target implies a 20% upside in the stock at current levels.

While removing General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) from this list is post-event, it's really hard to argue with the level of disappointment and game-changer that its earnings miss and earnings warning posed on Friday.  GE is noted as pointing to soft healthcare equipment spending as well.

We noted this on our "Top 10 Pre-Market Calls" as well, but General Electric was downgraded to Perform from Outperform at Oppenheimer it was also downgraded to Peer Perform from outperform at Bear Stearns.

Goldman Sachs Raises ALCOA Estimates Ahead of Earnings (AA)

ALCOA, Inc. (NYSE: AA) is seeing shares trade higher ahead of its earnings report after today's close.  Goldman Sachs appears to be the initial reason as it has raised its targets on the Aluminum giant.

For this year, Goldman Sachs raised the estimates from $1.90 to a new $2.95 EPS and for next year it raised targets from $2.90 to $3.70 EPS.  Both estimates are now above consensus.

First Call has consensus earnings before the call at $2.92 EPS for this year (Dec-2008) and $3.49 EPS for fiscal Dec-2009.

This is also part of a broader aluminum call as Goldman Sachs raised 2008 aluminum targets from $1.12/pound to $1.31/pound, and 2009 aluminum targets from $1.21/pound to $1.33/pound.

First Call has this quarter estimates at $0.48 EPS for after today's close.  As a reminder, ALCOA has a mixed earnings history that is not usually indicative of the broader economy nor for metals in general.

eBay Scores Merrill Lynch Upgrade (EBAY)

eBay, Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) shares are trading higher in pre-market activity this morning after Merrill Lynch issued an upgrade today.  The brokerage firm raised its rating from Neutral to Buy.

Merrill Lynch believes that eBay can post upside to estimates on what may be a conservative 2008 outlook.  The brokerage firm also believes that new management and a change mentality toward auctioneers will help as well.  The part that is somewhat surprising about this call is that Merrill Lynch sees the potential for some accelerated gross merchandise value, which if things slow further or remain slow won't be an easy task.

Who knows, maybe as people don't want to go to pawn shops they will sell all their luxury goods and collectibles on eBay this year.  eBay shares are trading up about 2.5% at $32.55 in pre-market trading this morning, while its 52-week trading range is $25.10 to $40.73.
