Western Union Q3 2026: Big Earnings Beat, but Revenue Still Sliding
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 4, 2026.
Two straight quarters of misses ended with a 24% earnings beat, though a 9% adjusted tax rate and a smaller share count did much of the work. The bigger catalyst is the Intermex deal, which closes by November 10 or can be terminated, deciding full-year revenue growth or decline.

Western Union reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.42 for the third quarter of 2026, beating the consensus estimate of $0.34. That ended a two-quarter losing streak on the bottom line, though the beat carried some asterisks: a lower adjusted effective tax rate of 9%, down from 12% a year earlier, and a reduced share count both contributed meaningfully to the outperformance.
Revenue told a less flattering story. The $1.01 billion result came in below the roughly $1.02 billion estimate, missing expectations, and declined 2.3% year over year. North America retail money transfer was the primary drag, with GAAP revenue in that channel falling 7%. On the brighter side, branded digital revenue rose 8% with transactions up 21%, and those digital transactions now account for 45% of Consumer Money Transfer volume.
Profitability at the GAAP level was squeezed by $37.3 million in charges tied to the company's Beyond efficiency program. That pushed the GAAP operating margin down to 13% from 20% a year ago, even as the adjusted operating margin held closer to 18%. GAAP net income fell 44% year over year to $78 million, and GAAP diluted EPS came in at $0.25.

The most consequential near-term variable is the pending Intermex acquisition. Western Union has set a November 10, 2026 deadline for the deal to close, and the outcome flips the full-year revenue outlook from growth of 0% to 1% with Intermex to a decline of 2% to 1% without it. The transaction is awaiting reinstatement of California DFPI approval, making regulatory progress the single most important thing for investors to follow heading into that deadline.
Full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $1.28 to $1.38 holds in either scenario, leaving the top-line trajectory as the swing factor. What changes materially depending on Intermex is that trajectory, and with it the market's read on whether Western Union's transformation is gaining real traction or still struggling against structural headwinds in retail money transfer.
